Soy protein is produced from soybeans and differs greatly from whey protein, which is a biproduct of cow's milk. Soy is vegan-friendly. Whey can cause allergic reactions in people who are lactose intolerant. Whey protein is also known to denature when it is exposed high levels of heat for an extended period of time (like in the baking of bars).
Soy Protein is an excellent substitute for animal protein because soy contains amino acids that other beans and vegetarian alternatives lack.
In 1999, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration authorized the use of health claims on food labels containing soy protein. As stated in an official FDA paper: "This new health claim is based on evidence that including soy protein in a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may also help to reduce the risk of CHD."
